Every day, we come into contact with chemicals—through what we eat, breathe, touch, and wear. While we can’t avoid them completely, there are easy steps you can take to cut back and feel better
Here are 10 simple habits that can make a big difference (and don’t cost a fortune):
1. Wash your hands often
Before eating, after being outside, and especially after handling receipts or packaging—washing your hands helps rinse away invisible chemicals.
2. Say no to synthetic fragrances
Perfumes, air fresheners, and candles can contain mystery ingredients. Go for fragrance-free or natural scents when possible.
3. Eat more whole foods
The fewer ingredients, the better! Fresh fruits, veggies, and grains come with fewer additives and preservatives.
4. Filter your tap water
Even a basic water filter can cut out chlorine, lead, and some PFAS. Clean water = healthy body.
5. Use glass, not plastic
Store leftovers in glass, especially if you’re reheating them. Heat + plastic = chemical leaching.
6. Clean with fewer ingredients
Simple is better. Try vinegar, baking soda, and lemon for a powerful (and safe) cleaning trio.
7. Take your shoes off indoors
Shoes bring in chemicals from outside—like pesticides and heavy metals. Leave them at the door!
8. Ventilate your space
Crack a window! Fresh air helps get rid of indoor pollutants that can build up over time.
9. Avoid non-stick and stain-resistant coatings
They might seem handy, but they often contain PFAS. Go for stainless steel, cast iron, or untreated fabrics instead.
10. Read the labels 🏷️
From food to makeup to cleaners—know what’s in your stuff. If you can’t pronounce it, maybe skip it.
